JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee is urging a new panel charged with recommending deficit cuts to consider spurring energy production to generate new revenues and create jobs.

U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, of Washington, sees the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a place where development should occur. In a speech to the Energy Jobs Summit in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, the Republican cited figures indicating that over the life of production, the refuge could generate about $150 billion in leasing and royalties. He said it could generate “several billions” during the 10-year window the deficit panel is looking at.

Hastings, who recently visited Alaska, said Congress must look for ways to generate revenue without raising taxes.

Hastings’ committee has until next month to make formal recommendations to the panel.
