FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) — King County Executive Dow Constantine has ordered an inquest into the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old Federal Way man by a Federal Way police officer.

The Seattle Times (http://bit.ly/mXKmCw ) reports Jedidiah J. Waters was fatally shot on July 21 in a Walmart parking lot. Police say the suspected shoplifter was being chased across the parking lot when he reached for a handgun.

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg recommended the inquest after his office reviewed materials from the Kent Police Department. Kent Police conducted the investigation at the request of Federal Way police.

Inquests are fact-finding hearings conducted before a six-member jury.
