It was a dreadful opening weekend for college football — sartorially speaking.

On Saturday, Boise State and the University of Georgia waged a desperate battle to see who could wear the ugliest uniforms.

Boise State won the game; the verdict is still out on the uniform contest.

Then, on Monday, the University of Maryland obliterated all known records for uniform malfeasance.

Looking like the Maryland state flag threw up on their helmets and shoulder pads, the Terrapins beat Miami on the field but were losers in the court of public opinion.

The NFL has one thing over college football these days — a uniform code.

Creativity has gone out the window.

And now some of the college football programs simply look like teenagers who dress not for style, but to simply annoy their parents.

And it’s working.

Oklahoma and Alabama might turn out to be the best teams in the country, but for now the top two spots on the Talking Points ballot go to LSU and Boise State. You know, teams that have actually accomplished something.

LSU manhandled a highly regarded Oregon team. Boise State traveled to Georgia and pounded a ranked team from the SEC.

We think that’s more impressive than Oklahoma beating Tulsa and Alabama beating Kent State.

We don’t necessarily like preseason polls, but they aren’t going away. We just wish that, once the season begins, the voters would rank teams based on merit rather than reputation or expectations.
