WINDHAM, N.Y. (AP) — The rainy aftermath of Tropical Storm Lee has drenched the Northeast, setting off flash flooding across a wide swath of Pennsylvania and forcing evacuations.

Pennsylvania officials closed roads Wednesday and braced for potentially worse problems along the Susquehanna (suhs-kwuh-HAN’-uh) River, which is still rising in communities from Harrisburg to Towanda. Gov. Tom Corbett says the river is projected to crest only slightly below the record levels experienced in Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

From Maryland to New England, heavy rains flooded highways and stretched emergency responders already dealing with cleanup from last week’s punishing blow from Irene.

In New York City, rain washed out the tennis matches for the second straight day at the U.S. Open.

The National Weather Service predicts heavy rain across the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states through Thursday.
