What’s happening in Clark College athletics:
MEN’S SOCCER: Season begins – The Penguins are 3-2 including two match wins at the Friendlies Tournament, Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Starfire in Tukwila. Clark defeated Shoreline 3-1 on goals by Jose Avalos, Isaiah Escobedo and David Casaras-Sanches, and Clark shut out Edmonds 1-0 on a goal by Escobedo. Clark opened NWAACC play at home on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Peninsula. Next — Clark will host Treasure Valley at 4 p.m. Sept. 16, and Wenatchee Valley at 2 p.m. Sept. 17.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Penguins are 0-3. Clark dropped a 2-1 match at home to Peninsula on Saturday. Hudson’s Bay grad Kelsey Frasier scored the Penguins’ goal. Clark lost 1-0 to Whatcom and 3-0 to Edmonds at the Friendlies Tournament in Tukwila. Next — Clark visits Yakima Valley at noon Saturday. The Penguins are home against Treasure Valley at 2 p.m. Sept. 16, and against Wenatchee Valley at noon on Sept. 17.
VOLLEYBALL: Clark opened its campaign with a 3-1 victory at Clackamas on Tuesday. Scores were 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-18. Columbia River grad Jessica Haley and Evergreen grad Morgan Harris each had 13 kills. Union grad Carmen LaFond had 34 digs. Next — Clark hosts Clackamas at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Penguins then visit Linn-Benton in Albany, Ore., on Sept. 15, and will be at the Clackamas Crossover, Sept. 16-17.
CROSS COUNTRY: The Penguins open competition on Saturday at the Pier Park Invitational, hosted by the University of Portland. Races begin at 10 a.m. with the men’s 8K . The women’s 5K race will start at 10:45 a.m. Pier Park is in north Portland, cornering N. Lombard and Bruce streets.
