EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Dan Persa will have to wait at least another week to make his return for Northwestern.

Persa was in uniform but is not playing in the Wildcats’ home opener against Eastern Illinois on Saturday as he continues to recover from a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

Touted by the school as a Heisman Trophy candidate, Persa has not played since he threw a game-winning touchdown pass against Iowa at home last November. He turned to run toward his celebrating teammates and crumbled to the ground clutching his knee with a season-ending injury, then watched as the Wildcats dropped their final three games to finish 7-6.

Running back Mike Trumpy (head) and defensive lineman Jack DiNardo (leg) sat out with injuries they suffered in last week’s win at Boston College.
