HAWTHORNE, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Highway Patrol says an Oregon man was killed when the pickup he was driving while pulling a U-Haul trailer crossed into oncoming travel lanes and crashed into a semi on a rural highway.
The patrol says 51-year-old Larry W. Kilburn of Sutherlin was heading south on U.S. 95 when his truck drifted into the northbound lane, striking an 18-wheeler that was hauling dog and cat food. The accident happened around 7:40 a.m. Sunday just north of Hawthorne.
Kilburn was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the big rig, 61-year-old Gary G. Campbell of Las Vegas, was not injured.
Authorities say the two-lane highway was closed for nearly seven hours while officers worked to document the crash site and crews cleared debris from the roadway.
