Streak of September heat sets record

It took awhile for summer weather to arrive this year, but 2011 is now one for the record books.

Sunday’s high temperature of 93 degrees in Vancouver marked the sixth consecutive day of 90 degrees or more — the longest such streak ever recorded in September. The previous best was five straight 90-plus days, set in September of 2003, according to the National Weather Service.

This year’s streak could have been longer. The two days prior to Sept. 6, when the run of 90-degree days began, both came up just short at 89 degrees.

Vancouver has now tallied 10 total days above 90 degrees in 2011, after waiting until Aug. 20 to see its first.

The Portland-Vancouver area may not see any more this year. High temperatures are expected to hover in the lower 70s for the rest of this week. The latest Portland has ever recorded a 90-degree day is Sept. 27, in 2003.
