Hiking book author slated

Guidebook author Craig Romano will present a program on day hiking in the Columbia River Gorge beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Clark Public Utilities Electric Center, 1200 Fort Vancouver Way.

His presentation will be given to the local Sierra Club and Audubon Society chapters.

The talk is open to the public.

Help needed to consider grants

OLYMPIA — Volunteers are needed to determine how to spend millions of dollars in state and federal funds for recreation, wildlife conservation and farming grants.

The state Recreation and Conservation Office needs volunteers to evaluate grant applications for programs that provide money for boating, backcountry trails, farmland preservation and shoreline protection.

Applications to serve are due by Sept. 30. Three farmers, three ranchers, two boaters, two habitat conservationists and five trail users are needed.

Bass club meets Sept. 22

PORTLAND — The Oregon Bass and Panfish Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave.

The program will include former guide Roger Luce discussing crappie fishing at Silver Lake in Cowlitz County and Rhine Messmer of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife about the process for developing angling rules.
