WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Walley threw two touchdown passes as Norfolk State held off Howard 23-9 on Saturday in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Walley’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Chris Johnson in the third quarter was part of 13 straight points by the Spartans that put the game out of reach. Walley completed 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards.

The Spartans (2-1) have won four in a row in the series and have outscored Howard 123-36 during that span. Norfolk State has won six of its past seven games dating back to last season.

Howard (1-2) opened the game with an 80-yard scoring drive, but the Norfolk State limited the Bison to 154 yards total offense the rest of the way. Howard’s only touchdown came on a 1-yard pass to Charlie Anderson from Greg McGhee, who had 118 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.
