SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing kayaker near Bainbridge Island.

The 27-year-old man went missing while kayaking near Bainbridge Island on Friday. The Coast Guard and Bainbridge Island Police have searched an area of approximately 45 square miles with six boats and two helicopters. The search was suspected Saturday afternoon.

The man’s kayak and a life jacket were located during the search. The water at that point was 55 degrees with winds of 10 knots.

A friend of the man reported the disappearance to the Bainbridge Island Police Department who contacted Coast Guard around 10:45 p.m. Friday.

The friend says he and the missing man were kayaking near Port Blakely when the man’s kayak began to take on water. The friend went for help but was unable to locate the man when he returned.
