SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police have resumed a search of the Utah desert as they investigate the disappearance of a mother two years ago.

West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell says searchers stopped excavating Saturday at a spot where cadaver dogs had indicated the possible location of human remains.

Police didn’t find any remains but did discover charred chips of wood that will be examined by forensics experts.

Dozens of officers and cadaver dogs were searching Sunday in the area around Topaz Mountain, a rock-hounding spot in central Utah.

Susan Powell, no relation to Mike Powell, was 28 when she was reported missing on Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for work.

Her husband, Josh Powell, is a person of interest in the case but hasn’t been arrested or charged.
