Soldier from Birmingham killed in Afghanistan




ATLANTA (AP) — U.S. Department of Defense officials say a soldier from Birmingham has died in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said in a statement that 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Michael W. Hosey died Sept. 17 in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan.

Officials said he died of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

Hosey was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
