SAO PAULO (AP) — Workers renovating Maracana Stadium for the 2014 World Cup have ended a strike following a judge’s ruling against them last week.

The workers returned to the construction site at the famed venue Monday after a stoppage of nearly three weeks. They were demanding better working conditions and higher wages.

A judge ruled the strike illegal Friday and the workers agreed to return after being guaranteed a new meeting with constructors. The workers already had stopped working for four days earlier in August.

Maracana will host the World Cup final in three years. The stadium also will be used at the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2016 Olympics.
