OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) — Former House Speaker Dave Hunt is running for chair of the Clackamas County Commission.

Hunt announced Tuesday that he will leave the Legislature when his term expires in January 2013. Hunt was the Democratic speaker of the state House in 2009 and helped push through an expansion of children’s health care, a major transportation spending bill and controversial tax hikes on businesses and the wealthy that became Measures 66 and 67.

Hunt became the No. 2 Democrat this year when Rep. Arnie Roblan was elevated to co-speaker. In June, he was not re-elected by House Democrats as their leader.

Hunt says he’s ready to move on after 10 years in the Legislature, and he says his state connections would help him at the county commission.
