Glasses stolen off Ernie Harwell statue in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — Glasses ripped off the white bronze statue of late Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell at Comerica Park in Detroit are expected to be replaced later this week.

Sculptor Lou Cela says Comerica Park officials reported this summer that the glasses were missing. It’s unclear exactly how — or when — the glasses were taken. The statue is inside the ballpark’s main gates.

Cela is a sculptor for the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany outside Chicago. He says the glasses were made to be durable but “if somebody wants to go all out and rip the things off, they can just do it.”

A West Michigan foundry is doing the repair work.

Harwell, a baseball announcing legend, died in May 2010 at the age of 92.
