Gov. spokesman: Progress made toward ending strike

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A spokesman for Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire (GREG’-wahr) says negotiators have made progress toward ending a teachers’ strike that has forced the cancellation of seven days of school in Tacoma.

Cory Curtis says both sides were still working out some differences late Wednesday after several hours of talks. He didn’t have details about the sticking points but said he was hopeful the issues could soon be settled.

Gregoire called negotiators to Olympia earlier in the day even though she has no direct control over schools in the state. Curtis says the governor is simply acting as an independent mediator.

The two sides have been disputing issues including pay and class size, but the major sticking point is how the district handles teacher transfers. The district wants to consider some factors in addition to seniority.
