Settlement prospects raised in Gatti estate trial

MONTREAL (AP) — A settlement could be in the works at boxer Arturo Gatti’s estate trial.

Court proceedings have been suspended in Montreal. The decision to negotiate represents a sudden reversal given the bitter battle pitting the wife of the late boxing champ against his family.

A few days ago, a judge asked them to put aside their enmity and share what was left of Gatti’s fast-dwindling fortune. But Gatti’s widow, Amanda Rodrigues, declared she would not settle.

The dispute stems from Gatti’s death at a Brazilian resort in 2009. The boxer’s family does not accept the conclusion of Brazilian authorities that he committed suicide. The family also rejects the legitimacy of the will, signed weeks before his death, that left everything to Rodrigues.
