Weather Eye: Final days of summer should be quite pleasant

According to the calendar we only have a few days left of summer officially this week and it will indeed be quite pleasant. Highs should be in the upper 70s to maybe low 80s. I will call it about 80 degrees plus or minus.

Autumn rolls in Friday around 2:05 a.m. And despite the old saying about exactly 12 hours of daylight, well not quite so everywhere. It is almost equal but is slightly longer in some areas away from the equator. If we wanted to get real technical we could also add the fact of atmospheric refraction, where the sun appears higher in the sky. You can search that out on the Web.

The weekend was a bit on the damp side for a change and I only received one complaint about the rain and you know who you are, veteran reader of this column! Rainfall amounts locally were about a quarter to one-third of an inch in the urban areas and 0.75 of an inch to over one inch in the foothills. Phil Delany above Dole Valley had a storm total of 1.3 inches and Dennis Murphy near Clark County Rifles measured 0.70 of an inch.

The extended weather outlook for October through December was recently revised by the National Climate Prediction Center. They are keeping us with above-normal precipitation but have now stated that the temperatures could have equal chances of being below, average or above average. So take your pick and stay tuned.

Autumn foliage is beginning to appear around the county here and there and it will be interesting just how fast the leaves drop off this year. An old saying goes that the longer the leaves stay on the trees the colder the winter weather will be. I haven’t kept track of that one yet so let’s remember that this fall and winter and see, just for fun.

Enjoy the pleasant days ahead this week and I will chat with you on Thursday.
