Baked loaves were on display of the beautiful, traditional braided bread that many Jewish folks prepare for special occasions. Some had been washed with an egg mixture before baking, to make them shiny. Others contained raisins for a slightly sweet flavor.

They aren’t getting enough meals to spur health, growth
More than a quarter of Clark County children aren’t getting enough healthy meals to nourish their growing bodies or, in some cases, aren’t getting enough food, period. Locally, 28 percent of kids and 17.3 percent of adults are food insecure, according to statistics recently released by the Chicago-based nonprofit, Feeding America. That translates to 31,160 children and 72,140 adults in Clark County, according to the nonprofit.

Salmon Creek — A homeless man, wearing a fuzzy hat, ragged clothing and walking with a cane, approached Nadine Louviere on the corner of 134th Street and 20th Avenue. Louviere’s “Panhandling for Polio” partners from Rotary were concerned for her welfare when the man hung around longer than most. At the end of the conversation, the man reached into a bag he was carrying and pulled out a jar with a dollar bill and some change. He reached into the jar and pulled out 60 cents and gave it to Louviere. He bent down, kissed her hand and tipped his hat as he walked away. Turns out his father died from polio. Including the man’s donation, seven Clark County Rotary Clubs raised more than $3,600 on Sept. 10 in their effort to help eradicate polio. Quilters donate to Samaritan’s Purse project
Felida — Blessed Piecemakers, a local quilting group, recently completed nearly 50 small tote bags to be included in gift boxes distributed worldwide each Christmas season through the Samaritan’s Purse mission project. The shoe boxes also typically contain small gifts such as toys and school supplies. The quilting group meets weekly at Felida Baptist Church, 3027 N.W. 119th St. The church will have a packing party to fill the shoe boxes in November.

Fargher Lake — Grangers from the Clark County area honored Sam Arola at Fargher Lake’s Appreciation Day ceremony Sept. 10. Craig Lynch, Fargher Grange master, awarded Arola for his role in the community. Arola, a traffic maintenance supervisor in Kelso and fire chief in Amboy, helped with a new fire station at Campers Hideaway and was the main force in starting the lawn mower races at Territorial Days. Several grange members were honored for their time of service: Barbara Hagedorn, 68 years; Ruth Ham, 65 years; Mary Ann Brown, 65 years; Betty Carpenter, 49 years; Maxine Lester, 42 years; and Bianca Elmer, 26 years.

Singing group honored by Barberton Grange
Barberton — The Barberton Grange honored the Marshallaires singing group at a luncheon in August. During the luncheon, the grange awarded the choir with the Barberton Grange 2011 Community Citizen Award for its involvement in the community.
