OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Gov. Chris Gregoire is going to call Washington lawmakers back for a special session to deal with a $1.3 billion budget shortfall.

Gregoire budget director Marty Brown said Wednesday evening that the governor is still finalizing details of the session but will make the announcement Thursday morning. He said the special session is likely to begin at the end of November.

State officials projected last week that the state faces a $1.3 billion shortfall in the current budget cycle because economic conditions have not improved as initially anticipated. Lawmakers are already scheduled to return in January, but Brown says the state has to get started on fixing the financial dilemma.

Gregoire has already asked state agencies to prepare for cuts as high as 10 percent.
