Quinnipiac basketball players face assault charges

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) -- Two Quinnipiac University basketball players arrested over the weekend on assault charges remain on the team pending the results of a university investigation into the incident.

Junior guard James Johnson, the team's leading scorer a year ago, and sophomore Ike Azotam, a 6-foot-6 forward, were charged early Sunday morning with assault and breach of peace following a fight on campus.

Police say they each struck other students in the face.

The school released a statement saying both players have been cooperating with authorities. Under the school's judicial policy, any sanctions would follow an investigation by a review board.

Both Johnson, who averaged over 16 points a game last season, and Azotam, who averaged five points and five rebounds, are free on bond and due in court on Sept. 26.
