COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The United States has been selected to host the 2015 road cycling world championships, bringing the event to the U.S. for the first time since 1986.

The UCI, cycling’s international governing body, selected the bid from Richmond, Va., on Wednesday during the road world championships being held in Denmark.

Colorado Springs hosted the worlds in 1986.

The championships are scheduled for Sept. 19-27, 2015, and will include road races, individual time trials and a new team time trial that will feature the world’s top professional teams.

More than 1,000 athletes from 70 nations will compete. Officials with USA Cycling expect the event to draw half a million people and be viewed by a global TV audience of more than 300 million.
