Battle Ground public schools, offices and switchboards will be closed Friday afternoon and students and employees will be sent home early.

It is the first of seven partial-day unpaid furloughs during the 2011-12 academic year, a result of reductions in state funding.

In negotiating the district’s budget for this school year, all employee groups, including secretaries, administrators, principals, maintenance workers, teachers’ aides and teachers, agreed to take a pay cut in the form of shortened school days and the afternoon unpaid furloughs.

Schools will be dismissed at varying times, from 11:45 a.m. at the high schools to 12:50 p.m. at primary schools. The school offices will close as soon as the buildings are cleared. An administrator will stay until all buses have departed and all children have left for home or been picked up by parents.

The district’s other partial-day, unpaid furloughs resulting from state funding cuts will be the afternoons of: Oct. 21, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 29, March 21 and April 18.
