BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns continue to work on a contract extension with star running back Peyton Hillis — very quietly.

Browns general manager Tom Heckert declined to comment Thursday on the status of negotiations with Hillis, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Heckert said the team’s stance is not to talk “until we get a contract done.”

Earlier this month, president Mike Holmgren said the Browns were “trying like crazy” to sign Hillis, who ran for 1,177 yards last season. The Browns are hoping to lock Hillis for several more years as they’ve done recently with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Thomas, defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin and tight end Evan Moore.

Hillis, who rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns last week in a win at Indianapolis, promised not to let the talks become a distraction.
