Red Sox still have edge for wild card despite flop

BOSTON (AP) — The pitching is in shambles. The hitting is spotty. And the defense?

The Boston Red Sox are dropping the ball there, too.

In less than three weeks, they’ve blundered their way from a smooth ride to the playoffs to a bumpy trip toward a spot on the list of historic collapses. And, somehow during their wacky September, they still have the inside track on a postseason berth.

Their wild-card lead has dropped from nine games over Tampa Bay on Sept. 4 to 212 games over the Rays and Los Angeles Angels. Boston actually gained a half-game on Tampa Bay despite losing to Baltimore 6-4 on Wednesday night because the Rays lost a doubleheader to the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox are 4-14 in their last 18 games and are off Thursday. They start a three-game series at New York on Friday, then finish with three in Baltimore.
