NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Ashton Leggett rushed for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday night and Illinois State held off South Dakota State 20-13.

Leggett’s scoring runs of 4 and 1 yards put the Redbirds (2-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) up 13-0, as the extra point after the first TD was blocked. The Jackrabbits (1-3, 0-1) scored midway through the second quarter when Mike Lien picked up Leggett’s fumble and ran 40 yards for a touchdown. That extra point was also blocked, keeping the score at 13-6.

Matt Brown connected with Tyrone Walker for a 29-yard touchdown on Illinois State’s opening second-half drive for a 20-6 lead. Walker caught 10 passes for 143 yards, while Brown was 22 of 34 for 214 yards.

Austin Sumner’s 1-yard run with 11 minutes left pulled South Dakota State within a TD, but the Jackrabbits lost their third fumble on the next drive.
