MatchDay: Timbers at New York

The Columbian
Published: September 23, 2011, 5:00pm

Timbers at New York

When/where: 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Bull Arena.

TV: Live on ROOT Sports (Comcast cable channel 34/734).

Radio: FM 101.1 (AM 940 Spanish broadcast).

Records: Portland is 10-12-7, 10th overall (the last playoff spot). New York is 7-7-15, one point behind Portland in the playoff chase.

Why to watch: Two teams battling for a playoff spot go head-to-head.

THE MATCHUP

The last time: The Timbers built a two-goal lead in the second half, but the Red Bulls rallied for a 3-3 tie on a stoppage time penalty kick.

New York drama: RedBulls coach Hans Backe has suspended defender Rafa Marquez for this match after comments the defender made calling out teammates in the wake of Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake.

High stakes: If either team can gain three points from a win in this match, it will boost the winner’s playoff stock. The Timbers currently hold the last of the 10 playoff slots, with the Red Bulls one point back.

Watch for: Portland’s energy level. Playing their third match in eight days and traveling across the country could test a Timbers team hoping for its second road victory.

NOTABLE

Scoring leaders: New York — Thierry Henry 12 goals; Dane Richards 7 assists. Portland — Jack Jewsbury seven goals and eight assists.

TV/radio reminders: The match is now scheduled to be shown on ROOT Sports, a change from the original schedule. Radio coverage will be only on 101 FM, not on 750 AM.
