ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — When Christopher Speakman hit the water for a day of surfing at Newport, he had no idea he would use his surfboard to help save the lives of three men.
The 60-year-old Corvallis surfer told the Democrat-Herald (http://bit.ly/nP1aBz ) he was swimming to some big waves when he saw three heads bobbing in the water. He got two of the men to use his surfboard as a flotation device. The other was injured so the surfer climbed onto the boat and helped that man out of the water.
The Coast Guard arrived 20 minutes later. Speakman caught a wave back to the beach.
Two fishermen were taken to a Newport hospital where they were treated and released. The third man did not go to the hospital.
