Man drowns while surfing along Oregon coast

TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) -- A 43-year-old man who drowned Saturday while surfing along the Oregon coast in Tillamook County has been identified as Duncan Green McCowen.

Oregon State Police say McCowen, of Corbett, was surfing at Short Sands Beach within the park Saturday afternoon with others surfers when they noticed surfboard had flipped. The other surfers found him unconscious and brought him to shore. They started CPR until emergency responders arrived.

He was flown in a Coast Guard helicopter to Tillamook County General Hospital where he died.

Police say ocean conditions were very rough Saturday and McCowen was reportedly a novice surfer.
