MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — Two Quinnipiac University basketball players have been arraigned on assault charges in connection with an on-campus fight earlier this month.

Senior guard James Johnson, the team’s leading scorer a year ago, and sophomore forward Ike Azotam both entered initial pleas of not guilty.

Both players have been suspended but remain on the team pending the outcome of a university investigation into the fight. Each is accused of striking another student in the face early in the morning of Sept. 18.

Attorney Thomas Lynch says he’s confident the school’s investigation will show Azotam was misidentified by witnesses, and he’s hopeful those charges will eventually be dismissed.

Lynch says he expects the university investigation to be completed before the pair return to court on Oct. 24.
