HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut’s governor says the University of Connecticut’s athletic future in the ongoing conference shake up will take longer to resolve than first expected.

Speaking to reporters outside his Capitol office Monday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy confirmed UConn is interested in moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference and says everything now hinges on a decision by the ACC about whether it wants to expand to 16 teams.

He says barring that move, “you fall back to the Big East.”

Malloy, a Boston College alum, says he’s had a half dozen conversations with UConn President Susan Herbst about the future.

He would not say whether he’s lobbied his old school for support, but added “Suffice it say, that I have had conversations with schools and governors.”
