ELLENSBURG, Wash. (AP) — A 52-year-old Ellensburg man has died after climbing a tree and falling.

The Ellensburg Daily Record reports (http://bit.ly/n5dw2l ) that Ricky Jollo and his 19-year-old son Steve Irwin were camping in the Reecer Creek area over the weekend when the father decided to climb a tree. The young man told authorities Sunday the two have had tree climbing competitions for years.

But once Jollo was in the tree, Irwin heard tree branches break, ran to the tree and saw his father at the base.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s office says Irwin then escorted two younger relatives camping with them off the mountain and alerted authorities.

No signs of foul play or alcohol were found.
