PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t big on style points.
Good thing, because there were few to go around after the defending AFC champions escaped Indianapolis with a 23-20 win on Sunday night.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 364 yards but fumbled twice and threw an interception. Running back Rashard Mendenhall again struggled, managing just 37 yards on 18 carries against a team that came in near the bottom of the league against the run.
Though Pittsburgh’s defense scored a touchdown on safety Troy Polamalu’s fumble return, it also allowed Indianapolis backup quarterback Curtis Painter to drive the length of the field and tie the game with just over 2 minutes remaining.
Coach Mike Tomlin says he doesn’t care how it looks, he’s just happy to escape with a win.
