PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Police say a roadside bomb has targeted a police van in northwestern Pakistan, killing one newly recruited officer and wounding eight others.

Senior police officer Naqeebullah Khan says the attack happened on Saturday in the town of Shagai in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He did not say who was behind the attack, but Islamist militants have claimed responsibility for such attacks in the past.
