Remick Kawawaki rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns, and the Columbia River shut out Hudson’s Bay in a Class 3A Greater St. Helens League game.

Kawawaki had a 53-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give River a 8-0 lead. He opened the second half with an 80-yard TD run to put River up 22-0.

The River defense got the Chieftains on the board first by tackling Richard Carter in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter. Columbia River held Hudson’s Bay to 139 yards of offense and six first downs.

“Our defense played really well tonight,” Columbia River coach John O’Rourke said. “Even when we gave (Hudson’s Bay) a short field, our defense really responded. We had several great stops on fourth down.”

Clayton Frank completed 16 of 21 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

“Clayton threw the ball well again,” O’Rourke said. “We struggled early, but then our running game got going at the end of the first half and into the second half.”

Big plays hurt Hudson’s Bay defensively. Columbia River forced Bay to punt with 37 seconds left in the first half. On River’s next play from scrimmage, Frank completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Jacobson, giving the Chieftains a 15-0 halftime lead.

Then, River scored on its next offensive play from scrimmage, Kawawaki’s 80-yard TD run to open the third quarter.

Carter rushed for 62 yards on 22 carries for Bay.
