Event aims at fulfilling grad’s dream

Jordan Crouch was a man who seemed to always have other people’s needs in mind.

The Skyview High School class of 2000 graduate needed several scholarships to fund his time at Seattle Pacific University, and he got them. So after he finished his degree, he dedicated himself to building a new scholarship to help even more underprivileged students attend the school.

“My nephew was just an awesome human being,” said his aunt, Debra Hull. “He was a Christian. He loved life.”

Crouch died on Jan. 1, 2010, at the age of 28, but his dream of a scholarship was something his relatives wanted to turn into a reality.

After graduating from the university in 2004, Crouch became a financial analyst, but he soon left that field to do what he really loved: working as a youth pastor.

“He never had a lot of money, but he was happy,” Hull said. “He really wanted to give back.”

In the past year, family members have raised about $14,000 of the $20,000 needed to create the Jordan Crouch Seattle Pacific University Scholarship Endowment.

They’ve organized a benefit concert starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, which they hope will raise the rest of the money, Hull said.

The free event at the Cameo Cafe, 7703 N.E. 72nd Ave., will feature three bands: Rock Creek Current, Strangeways, and Farcrye and Friends. Free appetizers also will be provided.

The organizers will auction off several items — including cruises, resort trips, gourmet dinners and golf and spa packages — during the event and take donations.
