CARSON, Calif. (AP) — C.J. Sapong scored in the 47th minute to help Sporting Kansas City improve to 4-0 this season with a 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Sunday night.

After both teams struggled to create offense in the first half, Sporting KC got things going only 2 minutes into the second half. Midfielder Graham Zusi unleashed a shot that hit the cross bar but was able to scoop up the rebound and send it across the goalmouth to Sapong, who headed home his third goal of the season.

Sporting KC nearly doubled the lead in the 74th when Kei Kamara sent in a header that was stopped by a clutch palm save from Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Chivas head coach Robin Fraser then had his team aggressively push the ball, but poor finishing proved decisive and Sporting KC was able to hold on.
