AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former Texas women’s basketball assistant Karen Aston is taking over the Longhorns with a mission to rebuild one of the nation’s premier programs back into a championship contender.
Aston, the head coach at North Texas last season, was introduced at a campus news conference in Austin on Tuesday. She emerged last week as the top candidate after a short search to replace Gail Goestenkors, who resigned March 20 after the Longhorns failed to advance past the first round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year.
Aston was a Texas assistant from 1998-2006 where she was the Longhorns recruiting coordinator. She helped build Texas’ 2003 Final Four team.
She left Texas to be an assistant for Baylor for one season before becoming the head coach at Charlotte in 2007.
