PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) -- A Pierce County sheriff's spokesman says a retired Puyallup, Wash., police officer opened fire on four intruders at his home, fatally wounding one.
Detective Ed Troyer says the unidentified officer called 911 on Wednesday afternoon to say multiple burglars had broken in while he slept and one of them came at him with a pry bar.
Troyer says the homeowner grabbed his gun and fired several shots and the intruders ran. The former officer was unhurt.
A short time later, deputies learned that a man with gunshot wounds had been dropped off at a nearby hospital. That man died about a half hour later.
KOMO-TV reports that deputies responding to the hospital found a man and woman inside a truck that had dropped off the injured man. They were both taken into custody for questioning.
Troyer says deputies are looking for a fourth person.
