Spill mars last race at Aqueduct

NEW YORK (AP) — A horse sustained a fatal injury and a jockey was removed by ambulance following a spill in the last race on Saturday at Aqueduct.

Bacchi stumbled and fell while running down the backstretch during the 11th race for claiming horses on the Wood Memorial card. Carlos Montalvo, his rider, was taken to a hospital for X-rays of his shoulder.

Rotten to the Core stumbled over the fallen horse and died instantly from head or neck trauma. Ryan Curatolo was dumped onto the track, but did not appear to be seriously injured.

Bacchi escaped the pileup with only a knee laceration.
