CINCINNATI (AP) — First baseman Lance Berkman tested his sore right hand and was back in the St. Louis Cardinals lineup for their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

Berkman was out for a 9-3 win over Milwaukee on Sunday because Randy Wolf was pitching for the Brewers and Berkman’s right hand was sore, the result of an awkward swing. He wasn’t in the Cardinals’ original lineup for Monday’s game at Great American Ball Park.

He showed up at the ballpark, took some swings and felt good enough to play. Manager Mike Matheny changed the lineup and put Berkman at first.

Berkman has 23 career homers at Great American, the most by any visiting player.
