Boonen to miss cycling's Amstel Gold Race

BRUSSELS (AP) -- WorldTour leader Tom Boonen has withdrawn from the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday because of a foot infection.

The Belgian won four major cycling races in the past month to take a big lead in the overall standings. But he was considered a longshot for the race in the southern Netherlands, which is geared more toward climbers.

Boonen complained of aches and pains over much of his body after winning the grueling Paris-Roubaix cobblestone classic on Sunday. Still, he wanted to compete in the Amstel Gold Race because the world championships this year will be run over much of the same terrain.
