Letter: Emphasize alternative energy

The Columbian
Published: April 10, 2012, 5:00pm

One of the largest controversies in our world right now is about alternative energy. In the world today, over 1 million metric tons of CO2 will be emitted into the atmosphere by cars alone. In one year, more than 4 billion metric tons. In order to reduce this number, we have two options: get rid of fossil fuels altogether or start using alternative energy more efficiently.

Our choice needs to be alternative energy. If we were to start relying on wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and other renewable resources, we could cut our CO2 emissions in half. British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell state that, by the year 2050, we will need to have one-third of our energy be renewable (altenergy.org). So why not start making that change today? The economical cost will undoubtably be great, but in the long run, ensuring the same amazing planet to our later generations will be worth the trouble.

Alternative, renewable energy is the right path for us to take to insure the safety of our planet for those who come after us. The world is changing. It is our duty to decide if for better or worse.
