BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran right-hander Joel Pineiro to a minor league contract.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter has been operating this season without a designated long reliever, and Pineiro could ultimately fill the void. He is expected to join Triple-A Norfolk this week and be part of the rotation there.
Pineiro was released by Philadelphia on March 19 after signing a minor league contract with the Phillies in January.
The 33-year-old Pineiro has a career record of 104-93 with a 4.41 ERA. He pitched in 2010 and 2011 with the Los Angeles Angels and also has pitched for Seattle, Boston and St. Louis.
Baltimore announced the deal on Wednesday.
