North Korea’s new leader given new key post

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea state media say new leader Kim Jong Un is now “first chairman” of the top state body while his father,Kim Jong Il,has been named “chairman for eternity.”

The announcement Friday of Kim as the first chairman of the National Defense Commission was made during a massive gathering in Pyongyang attended by Kim and other senior officials.

The rally came hours after a failed North Korean rocket launch that Washington and others said was cover for a long-range missile test.
