JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) -- The Defense Department says a 21-year-old soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord has been killed in Afghanistan on his first deployment.

Spc. Philip C. S. Schiller of The Colony, Texas, died Wednesday in Kandahar province of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at JBLM.

The military says Schiller enlisted in the Army in June 2010. His unit deployed last month.
