SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in Marion County, Ore., say a high school coach accused of having sex with a student over a three-year period has been arrested on rape and sodomy charges.
The Statesman Journal reports that 41-year-old Scott Leonard Zeigler appeared in court Friday and a judge set bail at $35,000. His next scheduled court appearance is April 20. It was not known if he was represented by a lawyer.
He was arrested Thursday.
Detectives say Zeigler works at West Albany High School in a program for troubled students and as a coach for several teams.
They said the charges involved a female student at Jefferson High School, where the man was head coach of the girls basketball team from 2008 to 2010. Detectives say the young woman told them her encounters with Zeigler began when she was 15 and stopped in the summer of 2011. Detectives said they recovered cell phone texting evidence.
