Talking Points: Making friends at an A’s game

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Kansas City Royal Jeff Francoeur is making a lot of friends in Oakland.

Last season, Francoeur took some good-natured ribbing from some bleacher bums. Because he was a good sport about it, those bums left him a plate of goodies on Bacon Day. (Don’t ask.)

The next day, Francouer threw a ball into the section. The ball had a $100 bill wrapped around it. Francouer told the bleacher bums to have a beer or bacon on him.

True love.

This week, with the Royals back in Oakland for another series, both sides provided more public displays of affection.

The fans gave Francoeur a T-shirt, commemorating another Bacon Day. (Again, don’t ask.)

Francouer then bought 20 pizzas for the section. Hopefully with lots of bacon.

What a guy!

Not so sure the NFL wanted this: The Saints have selected assistant coach Joe Vitt to be the interim head coach for the suspended Sean Payton.

The problem, of course, is Vitt will be suspended, too.

As head coach, Payton’s suspension will be one year and begins later this month.

As an assistant, Vitt is suspended for the first six games of the regular season, but the suspension does not start until the end of the preseason.

We think the NFL made its decision on the length of Vitt’s suspension as well as when the suspension begins so the entire franchise would not be decimated by having so many on its staff gone at the same time. We do not think the NFL expected one of the coaches being disciplined to actually get a promotion.

Not that we should be surprised. The Saints don’t seem to care much about what anyone thinks of them.

But now the story will continue.

Eventually, the Saints will have to name an interim head coach for the interim head coach.
