PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in the latter half of the 20th century celebrates his 50th birthday on Saturday.

The Asian elephant named Packy was born April 14, 1962, at the Oregon Zoo — then called the Portland Zoological Gardens.

Veterinarian Matthew Maberry, who delivered Packy, died at the age of 94 in January. He authored the book “Packy and Me,” about his personal experience with the elephant.

KATU-TV reports (http://bit.ly/Id4qsT ) the zoo plans a celebration.
